An Heirloom Chess Set for the Discerning Chess Enthusiast

This Staunton style chess set, board, and chess piece storage box is hand made. The details of its construction are as follows:

The Chess Pieces - The pieces are hand-turned and carved from Birdseye Maple and Cocobolo. The design specifics include a 4.625-inch King with a 1.875-inch base. The pawns were designed to adhere to the "four pawn rule" to match the associated 2.25-inch squares chess board. The queen's crown features the traditional dome and scalloped detail. The Bishop's miter and Rook details mirror the classic forms of these pieces. The Knights were hand carved and feature a raised mane detail. the individual pieces were weighted with lead and then sealed with epoxy. The bases are covered with billiard style felt. The pieces were then sealed with an oil and wax finish. They were buffed to a satin sheen.

The Chess Board - The chess board is a tournament sized board with 2.25-inch squares. It is constructed from Mahogany and Maple and includes a Black Walnut accent stripe to define the playing field. The sections were aligned with a spline technique. The board was sanded, buffed and sealed with an oil and wax finish. The back of the board is signed and cushioned with felt pads.

The Chess Storage Chest - The two coffer trays are constructed from Red Oak. They are padded and lined with felt to protect the individual pieces. The Birdseye Ash storage chest was assembled with 1/2-inch box joints. Birdseye Ash is extraordinarily rare and is almost impossible to obtain on the commercial market. "I have had three boards of this remarkable figured wood for 20 years, saving them for a special project like this."  The storage chest is also lined with felt and features Brusso brass quadrant hinges with a support arm that limits the lid opening to 95 degrees. The brass lid catch securely locks these treasured pieces.

This set is meant to be a family heirloom to be enjoyed for generations. It is signed and dated.
