Spalted Tap Hole Maple Bowl
Award winning wood turner Jan Close crafted this beautiful bowl from a maple tree that had been tapped for sap years ago, leaving the tap holes in the wood. The tree had been on the ground long enough for the start of the first stages of decay, which creates "spalting" - an extraordinary design feature created by nature. The bowl was kiln dried to prevent further decay. This stunning showpiece is a functional salad bowl as well (with dressing on the side!).
