POTSDAM, NY – September 8, 2015 – Kenyetta Oliver, a Senior at SUNY Potsdam, was the winner of the drawing for the Maple Run Emporium First Saturday Gift Basket on September 5.
The annual First Saturday event celebrates the first Saturday when students from SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson University are back in town. With “Passports” in hand, they visit shops and businesses to receive a sticker and enjoy the special offers “for students only” on that day.
Ms. Oliver, a 22-year-old Psychology Major from Brooklyn, NY, was happy to receive the big basket of maple treats and told Maple Run Emporium owner Mary Hilton that the only maple product she’s ever tasted was maple syrup. “We don’t really have syrup in Brooklyn the way you do in the North Country.”
Maple syrup was included in the gift basket along with an assortment of maple candies, nuts, tea, jerky, crackers, pepper, soap and lotion.
The two products Ms. Oliver said she was most looking forward to tasting were the Maple Caramel Corn and the Baconluxious Bar – a maple, bacon, and chocolate treat.
Ms. Oliver lives on campus and said she would share the basket of goodies with her roommate and friends.
Having completed the majority of her studies at SUNY Potsdam, Ms. Oliver has attended previous First Saturdays. She noted that the 2015 event had a larger turnout than in years past. “A lot of people came this year,” she said. “Some businesses ran out of stickers, which they said never happened before.”
Maple Run Emporium participated in First Saturday for the fifth consecutive year since it opened in 2011 and Ms. Hilton said, “It was definitely the biggest and best First Saturday I’ve ever had in the shop. It was busy, it was fun, and it was just great seeing so many students in here having a good time.”
During her terms in Potsdam, Ms. Oliver said she had visited Maple Run Emporium on several occasions prior to First Saturday and shared her impression of the specialty shop, saying, “It’s nice. It smells good. And it’s peaceful.”
